Redwood Base

The Giant Redwoods of the Sierras are simply awesome in height, girth, and width.  As with waterfalls, the grandeur tends to overwhelm the minute details.  Here at the base of a giant redwood we see a colony of bright green moss has set up home, next to a city of gray-green lichen, and both look down on the gathering-place where needles fall from high above, covering the earth and helping preserve the moisture therein, and also helping to form a mulch that will enrich the soil for further growth of the giant.
